The Lead: MIT generated 27 unanswered points in the first quarter en route to an 85-42 victory over Emerson College in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Saturday. Sophomore
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) led all players with 22 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two steals for the Engineers.
Ella Bushee powered the Lions with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- A layup by Nwogu followed by a three-pointer from sophomore
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) gave MIT an early lead. Bushee put Emerson on the board with a free throw at the 7:35 mark, however, a layup by first year
Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) ignited the Engineers' pivotal run which resulted in a 32-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Â
- The Lions ended their scoring drought courtesy of a layup by Bushee just 19 seconds into the second stanza while
Devin Hill followed with a jumper over a minute later. MIT's first points of the frame were a pair of free throws by Hall with 6:05 on the clock. The remainder of quarter was a balanced affair as Emerson recorded a 12-10 scoring edge, resulting in a 42-13 score at halftime.
Â
- The Lions opened the third quarter with baskets by
Olivia Deslauriers and Bushee. After an exchange of possessions, a steal by first year
Kaya Weiser (Villanova, Pa.) led to a bucket by junior
Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.), kicking off a 19-3 run which created a 61-20 advantage with 1:13 left in the period.
Ava Salti buried a three-pointer and then Bushee drained a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left. Nwogu replied with two free throws of her own, giving the Engineers a 63-25 lead.
Â
- MIT continued to control the action in the fourth quarter as it outscored Emerson, 22-17. The hosts' largest lead was 46 points (85-39) after Weiser's jumper with 58 seconds left to play, however, the Lions countered with a three-pointer by
Bianca Benson 19 seconds later.
