Women's Basketball Breaks Program Record With 84-35 Victory Over Mount Holyoke

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: MIT 84, Mount Holyoke College 35

- The Lead: With an 84-35 victory over NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College on Saturday, the MIT women's basketball team broke the program record for consecutive wins with nine. The previous mark was set in 1986-87 and was tied in 1998-99 and 2018-19. Five players reached double-digits in scoring for the Engineers with graduate student Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) posting a game-high 13 points to go along with five assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- A layup by sophomore Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) three seconds into the game ignited a string of 18 unanswered points by MIT. Mount Holyoke got on the scoreboard courtesy of a jumper with 2:53 left in the quarter. The Engineers went on to establish a 23-4 advantage at the end of the frame.
 
- The Lyons had an 8-7 scoring edge during the first four minutes of the second quarter. However, a layup by junior Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) sparked a 14-3 run which resulted in a 44-15 lead at halftime.
 
- MIT continued to cruise as it opened the third quarter with 13 straight points before increasing its margin to 70-22 at the end of the period.
 
- In the fourth quarter, the Engineers outscored Mount Holyoke, 14-13, resulting in the final score.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Sophomore Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) tallied 12 points, eight rebounds, and four steals while classmate Olivia Joseph (Newtown Square, Pa.) produced 11 points. First years Brianna Lebrun (Hartford, Conn.) and Kaya Weiser (Villanova, Pa.) both recorded 10 points as Choi dished out five assists. Sophomore Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) rounded out MIT with seven rebounds.
 
- The Engineers led the way in rebounds (45-23), points off turnovers (26-8), second-chance points (20-3), points in the paint (44-6), fastbreak points (12-0), and bench scoring (39-14)
 
- MIT shot 50 percent (33-of-66) from the floor, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from three-point range, and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line.
 
- The Lyons shot 26.5 percent (13-of-49) from the floor, 20 percent (5-of-25) from behind the arc, and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) at the charity stripe.
