Meet: 2023 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships
- Location: Worcester, MA. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center)

Results: 2nd of 7 (94 points)
- The Lead: The MIT men's swimming and diving team opened the 2023 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championship by winning both events on the evening as the Engineers took victories in the 800-Yard Free Relay and the 1-Meter Diving event. The Engineers currently sit behind Springfield which amassed 108 points on the evening.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
800-Yard Free Relay
- Junior Tobe Obochi (Highland Park, Texas), junior Jaden Luo (Austin, Texas), junior Brian Li (Austin, Texas), and first-year Cole Firlie (Sarasota, Fla.) won the event with a time of 6:36.60, as the team touched the wall almost a full four seconds ahead of second-place Coast Guard.
- The time is an NCAA B Cut mark and is faster than last year's invited time.
- MIT now ranks fifth overall in DIII in the event.
- Obochi, Luo, and Li were all members of last year's record-breaking team.
1-Meter Diving
- Sophomore David Benko (Budapest, Hungary) bested last year's winner and reigning NEWMAC Diver of the Year Luca Brashear in the event as Benko posted a final score of 519.95.
- Brashear finished second with 468.80 points.
- Benko finished fourth in the event last year.
UP NEXT:
- Day two of the NEWMAC Championships will begin tomorrow with prelims at 10 a.m. followed by the finals at 6 p.m. Scheduled events includes: 200-free relay, 500-free, 200-IM, 50-free, and 400-medley relay.
