Â
- The Lead: On Sunday morning at the Methodist Baseball Invitational, the MIT baseball team picked up its first win of the season as the Engineers defeated DeSales University by an 8-7 final at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as
JT Anderosky reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on a two-out double to left by
Joe Grigas for the 1-0 margin. MIT answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame though after a sacrifice fly from senior
Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and a two-run homer by senior
Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) that also scored senior
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.).
Â
- After single runs for both teams in the second and another unearned run in the top of the third pulled DeSales within 4-3, MIT put up four runs in the bottom of the third to jump out to an 8-3 lead. All four MIT runs were unearned as the Engineers put up three hits while also taking advantage of a pair of Bulldog errors.
Â
- DeSales chipped away at the five-run lead with single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings and headed to the bottom of the ninth trailing MIT by an 8-6 margin. Sophomore
Jimmy Moore (Los Gatos, Calif.) came on for the save for the Engineers and struck out
Joey Vaccaro to start the frame. The Bulldogs eventually added a run on a bases-loaded walk before Moore struck out the final two batters to secure the victory and his first career save.
Â
