Engineers Drop 70-45 Road Final at No. 20 WPI

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: No. 20 WPI 70, MIT 45
 
- Records: MIT (4-16, 2-9 NEWMAC); No. 20 WPI (18-3, 10-1 NEWMAC)
 
- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Harrington Auditorium)
 
- The Lead: In the second meeting between the two teams this season, the MIT men's basketball team fell to No. 20 ranked WPI by a 70-45 final on Wednesday evening at Harrington Auditorium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- After a 5-5 game in the early going, WPI scored 12 of the game's next 14 points to move in front by a 17-7 margin after seven minutes. MIT answered with a 13-2 run of its own over the next 5:11 of play, capped by a layup from first-year Rome Delgado-Gonzalez (Miami, Fla.) as the visitors held a 20-19 lead with 7:56 left in the first half.
 
- WPI clamped down defensively though over the rest of the opening period, holding MIT without a field goal over the rest of the half and putting together a 14-1 for a 34-19 halftime margin.
 
- MIT cut the lead down to 10 at 36-26 early in the second following a three from sophomore Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, Calif.) before the Worcester Engineers stretched the lead to 46-26 at the 13:44 mark after a layup by John Adams. WPI held onto the double-digit lead over the rest of the game to sweep the season series from MIT.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Delgado-Gonzalez finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, marking the 14th double-digit scoring game of the year for the rookie. First-year Tim Minicozzi (Belmont, Mass.) also finished in double figures with 10 points.
 
- John Lowther led WPI with a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double to go along with 14 points from Aidan Callahan.
 
- WPI held a 42-28 rebounding advantage, including a 15-7 margin on the offensive glass. MIT also picked up 10 assists on 17 made field goals to go along with 12 forced turnovers.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT is back in action on Saturday, February 11th as the Engineers host Wheaton College for a 2 p.m. start on Alumni Day.
