HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Set 1: After a kill from junior
Phillip Johnson (Chandler, Ariz.) gave MIT a 7-6 lead, the Golden Flyers went on a 6-2 run to take the lead. A kill from senior
Nick Gustafson (San Diego, Calif.) sparked a 6-3 run to put the home team up 19-17. MIT held onto the lead for the remainder of the set as an ace from senior
Troy Oliveira (
San Diego, Calif.) gave the Engineers the 25-20 set one win. MIT hit .571 in the set and held Nazareth to a .154 hitting percentage.
-
Set 2: Set two featured 11 ties and five lead changes with neither team able to pull away. First-year
Michael Rini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) gave the Engineers an 11-9 lead, but Nazareth went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. Rini stopped the run and two-consecutive attacking errors put MIT up 14-13. The two teams continued to battle before a 6-2 Golden Flyer run gave them set two, 25-21.
-
Set 3: Nazareth jumped out to a 10-6 lead, but MIT chipped away, and a kill from Johnson brought MIT to within two at 12-10. The Golden Flyers built a 19-12 advantage, but the Engineers continued to hold on as a kill from sophomore
Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) and an Oliveira ace followed by a Nazareth error got MIT back to within two at 19-17, but that was as close as they would get as the visitors took the set 25-22.
-
Set 4: Trailing 10-5, a kill from Rini helped spark the Engineers who eventually cut the lead to three at 16-13. Nazareth scored four of the next six points to go up by five, however, with the Golden Eagles holding match point, a kill from Johnson made it a 24-21 set. Back-to-back attack errors pulled MIT to within one, but
Owen Wickens sealed the win for the visitors with his 18th kill of the match.
