Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Comeback Attempt Falls Short as Roger Williams Holds Off MIT, 12-11

THE BASICS:

- Score: Roger Williams University 12, MIT 11

- Records: MIT (4-1); Roger Williams (3-1)

- Location: Bristol, R.I. (Bayside Field)

- The Lead: Trailing by three goals with five minutes remaining, MIT scored twice but it could not get any closer as Roger Williams University held on to defeat the Engineers, 12-11, in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday. Senior Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied three goals, one assist, six draw controls, two groundballs, and two caused turnovers for MIT.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- RWU opened the game with back-to-back goals, but a free-position shot by Rabenold followed by a goal from senior Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) evened the score at the 7:55 mark. The deadlock held until the Hawks recorded a player-down free-position shot over three minutes later. MIT responded with senior Grace Ann Carlson (Charleston, S.C.) scoring on a pass from Rabenold and then Carlson setting up first year Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) for the go-ahead goal with 38 seconds left.

- RWU rattled off four unanswered goals during the first five minutes of the second stanza, resulting in a 7-4 lead. Gambino found Rabenold for the Engineers' lone goal of the frame with 4:18 on the clock, however, the Hawks added another goal to increase their advantage entering halftime.

- In the third quarter, MIT outscored RWU, 3-1, to come within 9-8. Sophomore Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) redirected a feed from junior Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) just over four minutes into the frame and then Flusche set up Thomas a minute later. The Hawks notched their only goal with 4:08 on the clock but Julianne Flusche cut the Engineers' deficit in half when she connected on a pass from first year Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.).

- MIT tied the game at nine when Gambino scored on a feed from junior Katie Bell (Radnor, Pa.) at the 10:14 mark. RWU replied with a three-goal burst which ended with 5:09 left to play. After an exchange of possessions, Thomas found Rabenold with 3:09 to go. Following more back-and-forth play, Thomas narrowed the gap to 12-11 with 1:47 remaining. The Engineers won the ensuing draw but turned the ball over with 30 seconds left and could not regain possession before time expired.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Thomas finished with three goals and one assist while Gambino posted two goals and two assists. Julianne Flusche bolstered the offense with two goals and one assist as graduate student Christine Padalino (Potomac, Md.) contributed two caused turnovers.

- In net, senior Abigail Kolyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) notched one save and two groundballs in the first half while first year Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) registered three saves and two groundballs in the second half.
