Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third following a pair of scoreless innings on the mound for senior
Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) in his first start of the season. In the bottom of the third, MIT senior
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second and third on groundouts and eventually scored on a single to right by his brother
Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) for the 1-0 lead.
Â
- After a scoreless third inning, the Cougars struck for a big inning off the MIT bullpen as the team scored eight runs off six hits in the fourth. Leading the offense was a bases-loaded double to left by
Jason Sanfilippo that scored three runs before he was thrown out at third trying to stretch the play into a triple.
Derrick Vosburg also drove in a pair with a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle that made it an 8-1 game.
Â
- The teams traded single runs in the sixth and seventh for the 9-2 score, followed by a three-run bottom of the seventh to stretch the Misericordia lead out to 12-2. In the top of the ninth, MIT scored a single run on an RBI double to right center from Cartwright and a pair on a two-RBI double to left from junior
Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.). The Cougar pitcher eventually loaded the bases with Engineers before inducing a line out to center field to secure the 12-5 final.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
