The Lead: MIT produced four goals during the fourth quarter while holding Union College scoreless, helping it pull away for a 15-10 non-conference women's lacrosse game on Sunday afternoon. Senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded five goals and two caused turnovers for the Engineers while
Greta Maurer posted a hat trick for Union.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Rabenold opened the scoring with a free-position shot at the 10:35 mark, however, Union replied with unassisted goals from
Sydney McPartlon,
Anna Smith, and Maurer. Sophomore
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) cut MIT's deficit in half with 2:24 to go and then she assisted on a goal by Rabenold to even the score at 3-3.
Â
- Another free-position goal by Rabenold put the Engineers in front after 34 seconds elapsed in the second quarter. A defensive battle ensued until McPartlon found the back of the net with 5:51 on the clock. Almost a minute later, first year
Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) gave MIT a 5-4 edge which was increased by junior
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) at the 3:23 mark. Union responded with free-position goals from
Dana Truini and
Audrey Larson, creating a 6-6 deadlock at halftime.
Â
- The Engineers kicked off the third quarter with three goals in a span of two minutes. Senior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) connected on a pass from Arterburn and then Gambino set up Rabenold for a player advantage goal. Arterburn capped the spurt with an unassisted goal with 12:34 on the clock. Union countered with back-to-back goals from Maurer, bringing it within 9-8, but blasts from Flusche and Rabenold momentarily created some breathing room. However, the visitors used a free-position shot by
Christina Guanci and a solo effort by Smith to close the gap to 11-10 at the end of the frame.
Â
- First year
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) redirected a feed from Gambino exactly 1:42 into the fourth quarter while Arterburn found the back of the net three minutes later, increasing MIT's lead to 13-10. Midway through the frame Pyon found
Gwen Flusche for a player-advantage goal. The Engineers capped the scoring when sophomore
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) connected on a pass from Arterburn with 1:39 remaining.
