The Lead: Despite a fourth-quarter run by Endicott College, the MIT women's lacrosse team held on for a 13-12 non-conference victory on Wednesday night. Senior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) powered the Engineers with five goals and one assist while
Katie Schenk and
Katy Garvin both scored four goals for the Gulls.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The first quarter was a defensive battle as both teams scored once. Garvin found the back of the net after 3:33 elapsed and then junior
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) buried the equalizer at the 8:42 mark.
Â
- MIT controlled the action in the second quarter as it outscored Endicott, 5-2, resulting in a 6-3 lead at halftime. Gambino produced three goals, including an open-net free-position shot, as senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded one goal and one assist. Schenk notched both goals for the Gulls, one with a player advantage and the other with a player down.
Â
- Rabenold generated back-to-back goals during the first 90 seconds of the third quarter. The score remained unchanged until
Katie Wagner connected on a pass from
Kiana Napolitano with 8:19 on the clock. Schenk followed with a free-position goal 21 seconds later, narrowing the gap to 8-5. The Engineers ended their scoring drought at the 6:13 mark when Gambino redirected a feed from first year
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.), however, Schenk won the ensuing draw and quickly netted her fourth goal of the night. MIT replied with a player advantage goal from Rabenold, making the score 10-6 at the end of the frame.
Â
- First year
Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.), who set up Rabenold's goal at the end of the third quarter, earned an assist on Thomas's strike just 30 seconds into the final frame.
Carly Pearce buried a free-position shot but Flusche redirected a feed from Gambino to give the Engineers a 12-7 lead with 11:51 left to play. Endicott chipped away at the deficit as Garvin generated three straight goals while a solo effort by
Mia Smith brought the visitors within 12-11 with 5:52 remaining. Exactly 1:40 later, Arterburn found Gambino for what proved to be the game winning goal. The Gulls once again came within one when Smith set up
Alex Palermo for an extra player goal with 2:42 on the clock.
Â
- MIT won the ensuing the draw but turned the ball over due to a shot clock violation. Following its own timeout, Endicott was awarded a free-position attempt with 30 seconds to go. Strong defensive pressure prevented the Gulls from taking a shot and then graduate student
Christine Padalino (Potomac, Md.) forced a turnover just outside the goal with 13 seconds remaining. After a timeout, the ball quickly made its way to first-year goalie
Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) who held it as time ran down.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Rabenold tallied four goals, one assist, five draw controls, and three groundballs as Arterburn registered two goals, two assists, and five draw controls. Flusche finished with one goal and three assists while junior
Katie Bell (Radnor, Pa.) generated four caused turnovers and three groundballs. Dulde ended the night with eight saves.
Â
- Napolitano finished with three assists as
Matilda Darrah totaled six groundballs, six draw controls, and four caused turnovers.
Sophie Spaulding chipped in three groundballs while
Lydia Akins made nine saves.
Â
- Gambino and Rabenold became the 21
st and 22
nd players in program history to eclipse 100 career points.
Â
