The Lead: MIT outscored the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 9-2, in the second quarter helping it pull away before recording a 24-16 win in NEWMAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday. Graduate student
Ryan Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) produced seven goals and three assists for the Engineers.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Coast Guard opened the scoring four minutes into the game but MIT rattled off four goals to go ahead for good. After blasts by Gebhardt and first year
Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.), junior
Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) recorded a man-up goal and then set up senior
Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) with 6:22 on the clock. The Bears responded with back-to-back goals, narrowing the gap to 4-3. The Engineers created some breathing room during the final 53 seconds as first year
Bryce Metalios (Riverside, Conn.) scored on a pass from Nilsen and then Bleil added another unassisted goal.
Â
- MIT's lead grew to 9-3 after four minutes elapsed in the second quarter. First year
Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) buried a man-up goal 20 seconds into the frame and then Gebhardt found the back of the net 22 seconds later. Metalios capped the burst by redirecting a feed from Gebhardt. Coast Guard produced two quick goals, however, the Engineers generated six of their own to enter halftime with a 15-5 advantage. Gebhardt recorded three goals and an assist during the run while Bleil added a goal and an assist.
Â
- The visitors had a 6-4 scoring edge in the third quarter. Gebhardt was a factor in half of MIT's goals as he recorded back-to-back strikes and earned an assist on a goal by senior
Logan Paterson (Silver Spring, Md.).
Â
- The Engineers' margin grew to 24-9 following five minutes of action in the fourth quarter. Sophomore
Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) registered back-to-back goals while Paterson produced what proved to be MIT's final goal of the day with 9:55 remaining. The Bears replied by closing out the game with seven unanswered goals.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
