Meyer, Cartwright Lead Engineers to 15-3 Road Win Over WPI

THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (10-14, 5-5 NEWMAC); WPI (13-16, 2-8 NEWMAC)

- Score: MIT 15, WPI 3 (7 Innings)

- Location: Northborough, Mass. (New England Baseball Complex)

- The Lead: Behind a complete-game from junior Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) and six runs batted in by senior Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.), the MIT baseball team got back in the win column with a 15-3 road victory over WPI on Tuesday afternoon. Overall, MIT outhit the Worcester Engineers by an 18-7 margin.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- All of the MIT scoring came in the first three innings as the Engineers scored five in each to put the game out of reach. In the first, the key hits came on a two-RBI single to left by Cartwright, along with a two-run homer to center from first-year Lawrence Tang (Hopkinton, Mass.) as the visitors went up 5-0. After a solo homer by Jacob Hand led off the bottom of the first for WPI to make it 5-1 after one, the Cambridge Engineers answered with a five-run second as well.

- In the second, MIT took advantage of three WPI errors and put together five hits to seize control at 10-1. The hit in the second was off the bat of Cartwright as his three-run shot to center ties him for the NEWMAC lead with his eighth home run of the year.

- The offensive onslaught continued in the third as first-year Eitan Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) doubled to left center to lead off the inning and scored on a double to right center by junior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.). Junior Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) and Cartwright each drove in a run in the frame, followed by the third homer of the season from senior Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) that made it a 15-1 game. WPI added two runs in the seventh before Meyer struck out his eighth WPI batter of the day to wrap up the road win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Cartwright went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a career-high six runs driven in. Overall, Schoenfeld, Godfrey and Eitan Moore also put up three hits each, along with two hits and two runs batted in by Tang. Hand was the lone WPI player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
