No. 24 Softball Rallies for NEWMAC Doubleheader Sweep of Wheaton

- Records: MIT (25-4, 11-1 NEWMAC), Wheaton (19-11, 7-5 NEWMAC)
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Briggs Field)
 
- The Lead: The No. 24 MIT softball team used a late rally to earn an extra-inning walk-off victory in game one to help propel the Engineers to their 10th doubleheader sweep as MIT defeated Wheaton in NEWMAC action on Friday afternoon on Briggs Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME ONE:

- After sophomore Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch in the first, Wheaton took the lead in the second on a two-run single from Juliette Zito. The Lyons tacked on another run in the sixth to go up by three.
 
- First year Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) cut the Wheaton lead to two with an RBI single in the sixth, and senior Jordan Sell (Schwenksville, Pa.) got the Engineers to within one on an RBI single to left. Cable singled home Sell with the tying run on another single to left.
 
- With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, junior Katia Pendowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) hit a double to the centerfield wall, but the Engineers could not get the winning run across.
 
- The Lyons got a runner on third with one out, but first year Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) got two flyouts to end the inning.
 
- Ladd advanced junior Rylie Spiegel (Rumson. N.J.) to third with a bunt, and Spiegel came around to score the winning run on a wild pitch.


INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
 
-  Langmeyer went the distance to move to 15-2. She allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits with two walks and struck out a season-high 10 batters.
 
- Sell and sophomore Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) led the way with three hits each while Ladd went 2-3 with a run and RBI in the game.
 
- Sofia Knopf took the loss for Wheaton as she pitched 7.1 innings and gave up 14 hits, five runs (four earned) with one walk and three Ks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME TWO:
 
- Cable crossed home on a wild pitch in the first, but the Lyons took the lead in the third on a two-run homer from Bryanna Agan.
 
- The Engineers took control with a six-run fourth highlighted by a three-run shot to left from Pendowski.
 
- Wheaton got a run across in the seventh and had two runners on but were unable to get any more runs across against MIT starter sophomore Becca O'Connor (San Antonio, Texas).
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
 
- O'Connor improved to 8-1 with her seven innings of 10-hit ball. She allowed three runs and one walk.
 
- Amber Arcand fell to 7-5 as she went the first three innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits with one walk and one K.
 
- Pendowski went 1-3 with three RBI and now has eight career home runs to move into a tie for second all-time in team history.
 
- Sell led the way for MIT with two hits, one run, and one RBI in the lead-off spot.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- The Engineers remain on Briggs Field and will host NEWMAC for Smith for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, April 22. Before first pitch MIT will honor its Senior Class in a pregame ceremony.
