Men's Lightweight Crew

Men’s Lightweight Crew Races Against Harvard, Navy, Delaware, and Gordon

THE BASICS:

- Event: Harvard, Navy, Delaware, Gordon

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Charles River)

- The Lead: The MIT men's lightweight crew team competed against Harvard, Navy, Delaware, and Gordon College in its final home race of the season on Saturday. The Engineers' Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, and the Varsity 4+ each finished third while the Third Varsity 8+ was fourth.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- V8+: Harvard, which is ranked No. 7 in the IRCA/IRA Men's Lightweight 8 Poll, captured the win in 5:38.6. No. 6 Navy finished three seconds later, followed by No. 10 MIT (5:57.1) and Delaware (6:16.6). The Engineers got off the line really well and despite trailing Harvard and Navy during the first 500 meters, they were on a pace that could have produced a victory. However, MIT caught a boat-stopping crab at 800 meters which unfortunately took it out of the race with Harvard and Navy.

- 2V8+: In a tightly contest race, Harvard crossed the finish line first in 5:50.3. Navy was next in 5:56.2, edging out the Engineers by two-tenths of a second. Harvard built enough of lead to stay in front, but MIT remained bow to stern with Navy during the first 1000 meters. The Engineers clawed back into Navy during the next 750 meters until was a dead heat. Navy, however, had one last surge as it approached the finish line.

- 3V8+: Harvard picked up another close win, beating Navy by 1.9 seconds (5:55.9 – 5:57.8). The Navy 4V placed third in 6:08.4, followed by MIT (6:15.8), and the Harvard heavyweight 6V (6:47.6).

- V4+: Gordon recorded a comfortable win, logging a time of 7:01.9. Harvard was next in 7:13.8 followed by the Engineers (7:35.1).
