- The Lead: In a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon, the MIT baseball dropped a 12-6 home final to Amherst College at Fran O'Brien Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Amherst jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first, but MIT bounced back yet again and put up a four-run showing in the bottom of the inning to tie it up at 4-4. Senior
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) drove in first-year
Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) to cut it to 4-1, followed by an RBI double to right center that scored Sonandres. Junior
Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) pulled the Engineers even on a two-run homer to right, marking his fourth home run of the season.

- The Mammoths regained the lead with three runs on three hits in the second before extending the advantage out to 11-4 with a single run in the third and a three-run fifth.

- In the bottom of the seventh,
Sam Robin came on in relief for Amherst and was greeted by a solo home run from first-year
Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) to make it an 11-5 margin. MIT added a second run on an RBI single through the right side by Sonandres before Robin worked out of the jam with an 11-6 Amherst lead. The Mammoths closed out the scoring with a single run in the eighth to complete the scoring at 12-6.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Moore and junior
Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) led the Engineers with two hits each from the top two spots in the order, with Moore also scoring a pair.
Ryan McIntyre and
Tyler McCord paced Amherst with three hits each, including three runs batted in by McCord.

- Junior
Saketh Gabbita (Ashburn, Va.) took the loss for MIT and is now 0-3 on the season, while
Caden McClure went six innings for Amherst and allowed four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts to improve to 1-0 overall.

- MIT is back in action on Friday, April 28th as the Engineers host Emerson College at 3:30 p.m. in the opener of an important three-game NEWMAC weekend series. Prior to the game, the team will honor this year's Senior Class for their contributions to the MIT baseball program throughout their careers.
