Â
- The Lead: On Senior Day on Friday afternoon, the MIT baseball team opened a three-game weekend series with a 9-6 home win over Emerson College. Prior to the start of the game, the Engineers honored the program's Senior Class for their contributions to the program during their MIT careers.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- After Emerson picked up an unearned run in the first when
Jake Hatch scored on a throwing error, the Engineers answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Junior
Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) scored the first run, while sophomore
Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) ripped a double down the left field line to drive in first-year
Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) for the 2-1 edge. Junior
Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) kept his bat hot as of late and singled to left, scoring Tubbs from third.
Â
- Hatch and
Briggs Loveland scored unearned runs for the Lions in the third to tie the game and it remained that way until the bottom of the fourth. In that inning, MIT strung together five hits, including a triple down the right field line by Godfrey and a two-RBI single from first-year
Eitan Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) that gave the Engineers the lead for good at 7-3.
Â
- Emerson answered in a big way in the top of the fifth as the Lions took advantage of two MIT errors, leading to an eventual three-run home run to left field by
Chris Ferera that pulled the visitors within 7-6.
Â
- MIT added insurance runs in the fifth on a Malone run on a wild pitch and an RBI sacrifice fly from Godfrey that brought in Tubbs in the seventh. Sophomore
Ethan Siegel (Austin, Texas) came on in the eighth and held the Lions scoreless to secure the save and the win for the Engineers.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Moore went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Godfrey finished 2-for-3 with three runs driven in. Hatch was the lone Lion with multiple hits, ending the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Â
- Sophomore
Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) earned the victory with three innings of three-hit relief as he moves to 3-2 on the season. Siegel picked up his third save of the year as he allowed one hit with one walk and one strikeout in two innings.
Chris Lowe took the loss for the Lions, dropping to 2-4 as he allowed eight runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings.
Â
UP NEXT:
Â
- MIT closes out the NEWMAC regular-season schedule on Saturday, April 29th as the Engineers travel to Emerson College for a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. Those games will be played at St. John's Prep in Danvers, Mass. and have been moved up two hours from the original time due to expected inclement weather.
