The Lead: The MIT men's lightweight crew team saw its Second Varsity 8+ defeat Williams College and Tufts University on Saturday morning. Competing against heavyweight boats in cold and rainy conditions with headwind gusts, the Engineers finished second in the Varsity 8+ and V4+ races while the Third Varsity 8+ placed third.
HOW IT HAPPENED:

V8+: MIT got jumped at the start and fell behind Williams and Tufts. The Engineers easily worked their way back through Tufts but got stuck about a length behind Williams. Williams, ranked No. 1 in the IRCA/IRA Men's Division III Varsity 8 Poll, won in 6:10.9, followed by MIT (10
th in the IRCA/IRA Men's Division I Lightweight Varsity 8 Poll) in 6:15.5. Tufts, No. 5 in the Division III Poll, finished 6.4 seconds later.

2V8+: The Engineers got out to a quick lead and extended it a bit. MIT then held off Williams in the sprint with Tufts well behind. No. 10 MIT crossed the finish line in 6:33.1, edging out No. 1 Williams by 1.7 seconds. No. 4 Tufts was third in 6:43.6.

3V8+: MIT fell behind Williams right away but battled with Tufts down the course, eventually establishing almost a length lead. During the final 500 meters, Tufts sprinted through the Engineers to win by .3 seconds. Tufts finished 9.4 seconds behind Williams, followed by MIT.

V4+: Tufts jumped out to an early lead and stayed well ahead, finishing in 8:04.4. MIT rowed a tough race against Williams and came away with a 3.1 second victory (8:26.9 – 8:30.0).
