Men’s Lightweight Crew Has Strong Start to Spring Season

THE BASICS:

- Events: National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational and Bates College

- Location: Princeton, N.J. (Lake Carnegie) and Cambridge, Mass. (Charles River)

- The Lead: The MIT men's lightweight crew team kicked off the spring season with a full weekend of racing. The Engineers competed at the National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational on Saturday and despite a quick turnaround, they won all their races against Bates College on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED – National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational:

- V8 vs. Penn and Georgetown: In a very close race, Penn took the early lead but MIT was right with Georgetown from the start. However, Georgetown made a move in the second 500 meters which created enough of a cushion that prevented the Engineers from gaining any ground. Penn claimed first place in 5:41.7, followed by Georgetown (5:42.2), and MIT (5:46.4).

- 2V8 vs. Penn and Georgetown: MIT had a fast start but couldn't hold off Penn, which crossed the finish line first in 5:51.9. The Engineers fought off Georgetown throughout the race and came away with the 3.4 second victory (5:55.3 – 5:59.6).

- 3V8 vs. Penn and Georgetown: Penn recorded a comfortable win in 6:03.0, ahead of Georgetown (6:10.1) and MIT (6:19.3).

- V8 vs. Princeton and Mercyhurst: Princeton, one of the fastest crews in the country, had an extremely quick start and came away with the win in 5:38.0. The Engineers crossed the finish line 5.7 seconds later and recorded a 10-second victory over Mercyhurst.

- 2V8 vs. Princeton: The Engineers had a fast start and held well through the first half of the race. However, Princeton battled back to take the win in 5:45.9, exactly 12.3 seconds ahead of MIT.

- 3V8 vs. Princeton and Penn: The Engineers had a stronger start compared to their morning race, but it impacted the second 1000 meters. Princeton finished first in 6:02.3, followed by Penn (6:07.2) and MIT (6:21.0).

HOW IT HAPPENED – Bates College:

- In each race, MIT got out to an early lead which grew throughout the course.

- V8: MIT 6:26.6, Bates 6:42.1
- 2V8: MIT 7:03.7, Bates 7:17.8
- 3V8: MIT 7:07.8, Bates 7:29.7
- V4+: MIT 8:54.2, Bates 9:25.8
