Men's Track and Field

No. 1 Engineers Capture 21st All-Time NEWMAC Championship

THE BASICS:
 
- Location: Sherie and Don (1961) Morrison Track (Cambridge, Mass.)
 
- The Lead: On Sunday afternoon, the No. 1 ranked MIT men's track and field team captured the program's 21st all-time NEWMAC title with a 126-point victory over runner-up Springfield College at the 2023 NEWMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The Engineers have now won all 21 NEWMAC Championships that they have competed in.

HOW IT HAPPENED ON SUNDAY:
 
- Sophomore Sam Engebretson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) again picked up two wins on Sunday as he captured the shot put and the discus throw. He won the shot with a throw of 54 feet, two inches to earn that title by 0.75 inches. In the discus, he threw 151 feet, eight inches to win the event by 12 feet. Senior Henry Sobieszczyk (Newton, Mass.) placed third in the shot put, while first-year Jackson Bliey (Wilmington, Del.) was third in the discus at 131 feet, 11 inches.
 
- In the 800 meters, first-year Charlie Glass (Austin, Texas) led four Engineers in top five as he won the event in a championship-record time of 1:52.66. Sophomore Ziyad Hassan (Ashburn, Va.) was second in 1:53.52, along with sophomore Pau Ilerbaig-Bajona (Toronto, Canada) in fourth in 1:55.60 and graduate student Matthew Schofield (Shorewood, Ill.) at fifth in a time of 1:56.41.
 
- In the 110-meter hurdle finals, senior Kenneth Wei (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) paced a top-three sweep for MIT and is ranked fourth nationally in a time of 14.24. Sophomore Walter Truitt (Houston, Texas) was second at 14.37 seconds, followed by first-year Enoch Ellis (Garland, Texas) in third at 14.64 seconds.
 
- In the 400 meters, first-year Jack DeBaugh (Severna Park, Md.) took first in a time of 49.07 seconds to lead three MIT scorers in the event. Senior Evan Schaefer (Frederick, Md.) finished fourth in 51.16, followed by first-year Conrad Casebolt (Aurora, Colo.) in sixth at 52.44.
 
- Sophomore Simon Opsahl (Redlands, Calif.) paced three Engineers in the top four in the 1,500 as he won in a time of 3:57.75. Junior Nate Sesti (Clarkston, Mich.) crossed in third in 4:00.92, along with sophomore Reece Shuttleworth (Arlington, Va.) in fourth in 4:01.48. In the relays, the MIT 4x100 team placed second in a time of 42.42 seconds, while the 4x400 closed out the meet with a win in a time of 3:19.10.
 
- In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Pablo Arroyo (Richardson, Texas) won the event with a time of 9:28.42. First-year Jake Cobb (West Deptford, N.J.) crossed in second at 9:30.62.
 
- In the high jump, Bliey won the event with a height of six feet, 4.75 inches and was followed in sixth by junior Spencer Yandrofski (Chapel Hill, N.C.) with a clearance of six feet, 2.75 inches. First-year Sean Huckleberry (San Francisco, Calif.) won the triple jump as he leapt 45 feet, five inches.
 
- Four Engineers scored in the 100 meters, led by a third-place showing by first-year Nolan Clement (Fullerton, Calif.) in a time of 10.78 seconds. First-year Zac Nwogwugwu (London, United Kingdom) crossed in fourth at 10.78, followed by senior Mozi Guobadia (Katy, Texas) in sixth in 10.81 and senior Jeremiah Budiman (Plano, Texas) at eighth with a time of 10.88 seconds.
 
- In the 200, junior Garrett Whitmore (Webster City, Iowa) led MIT in fourth in 22.22 and was followed by junior Will Liu (San Marino, Calif.) in seventh with a time of 22.35 seconds. The Engineers also had two scorers in the 5,000 meters as sophomore Samuel Coutts (Pacific Grove, Calif.) was third at 15:01.75, along with senior Vedang Lad (Plainsboro, N.J.) in fourth in a time of 15:16.72.
