The Lead: Despite late lineup changes that resulted in people rowing on the wrong side in the MIT men's lightweight Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ boats, the Engineers captured first and third place in their respective Grand Finals at the Dad Vail Regatta this past weekend. In addition, the Third Varsity 8+ was fourth in its Grand Final.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
V8+: Battling just No. 11 Mercyhurst for The Thomas Loschiavo Trophy, No. 10 MIT recorded a 4.247 second victory over the Lakers (5:49.118 – 5:53.365). The lineup shuffling had a slight impact during the middle of the race, but the Engineers broke through Mercyhurst in the third 500 meters to claim the win.
-
2V8+: Following its time trial, No. 10 MIT tied Temple for the second fastest time in the semifinals (6:00:57). In the Grand Final of The Ernie Bayer Trophy, Drexel and Temple jumped out to an early lead. The Engineers still had a solid race as they held off a La Salle sprint to the finish to place third overall. The 1.138 second victory over La Salle was significant as the Explorers defeated MIT at the Knecht Cup earlier in the season. Drexel finished first in 5:48.798, followed by Temple (5:50.204), the Engineers (5:55.492), La Salle (5:56.630), St. Joseph's (6:00.366), and Colgate (6:11.210).
-
3V8+: MIT put together its best row of the year in the Grand Final as it logged a time of 6:15.830. However, the remaining crews overpowered the Engineers in the middle of the race. Temple claimed the victory in 5:55.106, followed by Drexel (5:57.284), and St. Joseph's (6:06.712).
