No. 2 Men's Track and Field Leads After Day One at NCAA Outdoor Championship

THE BASICS:

- Location: Polisseni Track and Field Complex (Rochester, N.Y.)

- The Lead: Behind All-American performances from senior Kenneth Wei (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), sophomore Sam Engebretson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and senior Matthew Kearney (Austin, Texas), the No. 2 MIT men's track and field team leads with 14 points after day one at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the discus, Engebretson earned his first career All-America honor after placing fourth with a personal-best toss of 168 feet, seven inches. His throw also broke the previous facility record.

- Wei nearly defended his national championship in the long jump as he finished as the national runner-up with a season-best leap of 25 feet, 2.75 inches.

- In the 1,500-meter prelims, graduate student Ryan Wilson (Redwood City, Calif.) advanced to the final with a facility-record time of 3:47.09 to win his heat and enter the final as the top seed. Junior Henry Hardart (Annapolis, Md.) got tangled up with another runner early on in the race, finishing 22nd overall in 4:05.36.

- Sophomore Pablo Arroyo (Richardson, Texas) placed 17th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he crossed in 9:07.85 to break the previous facility record.

- In the final event of the night, the MIT trio Kearney, Vedang Lad (Plainsboro, N.J.) and Andrew Mah (Newton, Mass.) took to the track for the 10,000-meter final. In a back-and-forth race, Kearney made a move in the final third of the race and picked up All-American honors for the Engineers with an eighth-place finish at 29:20.76. Lad finished 19th in 29:49.67, followed by Mah in 20th at 29:50.63 as all three Engineers broke the previous facility record.
