The Lead: A 6-1 run during the last seven minutes of the second quarter helped top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 22 MIT pull away from No. 4 seed U.S. Coast Guard Academy as it went on to record a 16-6 victory in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday night. Senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) powered the Engineers with five goals, three assists, and six draw controls while
Gianna Cascio led the Bears with three goals and one assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Coast Guard opened the scoring when Cascio set up
Caitlyn Coates after 2:26 expired. Sparked by back-to-back goals by Rabenold, MIT put together a 4-0 run which also featured a free-position goal by senior
Grace Ann Carlson (Charleston, S.C.) and a goal by junior
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) which earned Rabenold an assist. Cascio narrowed the gap to 4-2 when she redirected a feed from
Abby McAllister with 2:16 on the clock.
- Senior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) connected on a pass from first year
Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.), giving the Engineers some breathing room early in the second stanza. The Bears narrowed the gap to 5-3 courtesy of a free-position goal by
Brenda Anderson at the 11:04 mark. The score remained unchanged until Flusche found Arterburn, kicking off MIT's pivotal 6-1 run. Arterburn was a factor in the next two goals as she scored on a pass by Rabenold and then she earned an assist on a goal by Rabenold. Cascio broke up the scoring run with 2:09 on the clock, but Gambino and Rabenold countered with goals of their own during the last 1:06, resulting in a 10-4 halftime lead.
- The third quarter was a defensive battle as McAllister netted the only goal of the frame, occurring at the 5:03 mark.
- The Engineers controlled the action in the fourth quarter as they outscored Coast Guard, 6-1, for the 16-6 final. First year
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) produced one goal and two assists for the hosts while Gambino scored twice. Cascio accounted for the lone marker for the Bears.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Arterburn finished with three goals and two assists as Gambino registered four goals, four groundballs, and two caused turnovers. Flusche and Thomas both posted one goal and three assists while Flusche added four draw controls. Sophomore
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) tallied four groundballs, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers as graduate student
Christine Padalino (Potomac, Md.) recorded four groundballs and three caused turnovers. In net, senior
Abigail Kolyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) generated eight saves and three groundballs.
- McAllister notched one goal and two assists as
Laura Henry chipped in two draw controls.
Maici Mintchwarner made six saves in the first half while
Devon McCue had five saves and four groundballs in the second half.
- This was the first postseason meeting between both programs.
- With her five-goal performance, Rabenold broke the program record for goals in a season as she eclipsed the mark of 78 which was set by
Emily Young '18 in 2018. She currently has 79 goals this year and 140 for her career, which ranks ninth all-time in program history.
