- The Lead: After top-seeded Wheaton College jumped out to an early 5-0, No. 4 seeded MIT rallied to force extra innings before dropping an eventual 6-5 final in 12 innings on Saturday afternoon in the NEWMAC Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Wheaton took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the Lyons put up three hits in the inning. With the score standing at 3-0 with two outs in the frame, Wagner doubled to left with two on to score
Nick Giangrego and
Robert Wirtanen to make it 5-0.

- MIT got one back in the top of the third as sophomore
Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) led off with a single through the left side and eventually scored on a two-out single to left to cut the margin to 5-1. Senior pitcher
Ben Burke (Chelmsford, Mass.) held the Lyons off the scoreboard from the second through the seventh inning, allowing just two baserunners over that span.

- After Burke set down the Lyons in order in the seventh, MIT came roaring back with five hits and four runs to tie the game at 5-5. Junior
Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) led off with a bunt single and later scored on an RBI single by senior
Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.). After senior
Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) drove in
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) with MIT's third run, junior
Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) singled through the left side to drive in a pair and knot the game up at 5-5.

- The game stayed tied up at 5-5 until the bottom of the 12th when
Tommy Ambrosone singled to first to lead off the frame. He came home on the next play as a sacrifice bunt attempt by
AJ Guindon eventually led to throwing error by the Engineers as Ambrosone scored the game-winning run.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Kyle Sonandres, Cartwright and Gumbs each finished with two hits apiece for MIT, while
Nick Croteau was the offensive leader for Wheaton with a 3-for-5 day at the plate.

- First-year
Cole Foster (Austin, Texas) took the loss on the mound to fall to 1-3 overall, while
Joe Mulhern got the win in two innings of scoreless relief to move to 2-1 on the season. Burke struck out seven over seven innings pitched, while sophomore
Ethan Siegel (Austin, Texas) struck out eight over 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
