The Lead: The MIT men's lightweight crew team concluded its season with the Varsity 8+ finishing second in the Petite Final at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
Heat: Despite getting off to a slow start on Friday, MIT fought hard to be up a little on Cornell in the first 250 meters. The Engineers continued to battle during the first 1000 meters, remaining within striking distance of third place. However, MIT was unable to maintain its pace during the second half of the race, finishing fourth in 5:57.287. Princeton took the top spot in 5:43.417, followed by Penn (5:45.563), and Cornell (5:45.599).
-
Petite Final: In a two-boat race with Dartmouth on Sunday, the Big Green got out to an early lead which grew to a boat length after 500 meters. The Engineers stayed close but could not gain any ground as Dartmouth took the victory in 5:51.699, just 3.788 seconds ahead of MIT.
