New Orleans, La. (June 8) -- For the second consecutive year, the MIT men's cross country and track and field programs have been named as the recipient of the Al Carius Men's Program of the Year Award, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Â
The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field seasons) based on the institution's finish at the NCAA Championships.
Â
The Engineers began the year with the first NCAA team national championship ever for any sport at MIT as the team won the 2022 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship in Lansing, Michigan. Five student-athletes earned All-American honors and
head coach Riley Macon was named as the USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year as the Engineers finished the meet with 82 points for the 47-point margin of victory.
Â
Indoors, MIT finished as the NCAA National Runner-Up as graduate student
Ryan Wilson (Redwood City, Calif.) and senior
Kenneth Wei (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) each won individual national titles in the mile and the long jump, respectively. Wilson's time in the mile set the NCAA Championship meet record as the Engineers finished the meet with seven All-American performances and tied the program's top finish ever dating back to 1990. In addition, Macon was named as the USTFCCCA National Assistant Coach of the Year for his work with the distance group.
Â
MIT capped off the year with the first NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship in school history with a total of 60.5 points over the three-day meet. Led by individual national championships from Wilson in the 800 and the 1,500 and first-year
Enoch Ellis (Garland, Texas) in the 110-meter hurdles, the Engineers amassed 40.5 points on the final day to earn the 11.5-point victory. MIT finished the meet with nine All-American performances as
Todd Linder was named as USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year and
