Sport Shorts Spotlight: Engineers Open Season With Back-to-Back Shutouts

MIT field hockey opened the 2026 season in impressive fashion, posting consecutive shutout victories over Simmons and the University of New England to start the year 2-0. The Engineers overwhelmed Simmons, 4-0, in the season opener, outshooting the Sharks 33-1 while Janie Thomas scored twice. MIT then followed with a hard-fought 2-0 victory at UNE, with Ingrid Tomovski contributing a goal and an assist. Alexia Ninios anchored the defense with shutouts in both games, including five saves against UNE. Through two games, MIT has outshot its opponents 49-12 and has yet to allow a goal. The Engineers now face their biggest test of the young season when they travel to No. 13 Endicott on Wednesday night.
