Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) generated two goals and an assist as the nationally ranked No. 12 Engineers defeated University of New England, 5-0, in a non-conference field hockey game on Friday afternoon. This was the 14
th year in a row MIT won its home opener while also recording its third straight season-opening victory.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT opened the scoring after 6:05 expired when Tomovski sent a blast from the top arc courtesy of a pass from first year
Sammi Blocher (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) on a penalty corner.
Â
- UNE's
Shelly Tremblay almost evened the score in the 19
th minute but first year goalie
Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) kicked the ball out of the way. The Engineers followed with a pair goals to go up 3-0. First year
Janie Thomas (Houston, Texas) collected the ball around the 25-yard line, dodged a few defenders and then unleashed a shot from the far side of the arc in the 21
st minute. MIT found the back of the cage just over seven minutes later when graduate student
Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) chipped a high pass from the near post to the top corner of the far post which was tapped in by junior
Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.).
Â
- The Engineers extended their advantage after 3:14 elapsed in the third quarter. Tomovski sent a throughball which was corralled by Forester. She then dodged goalie
Dawn DeWeese-Moss before taking a shot from the far side which went to the near post.
Â
- The Nor'easters threatened to end the shutout in the fourth quarter as they were awarded four penalty corners and saw
Makenna Valentine and
Kennedy St. Pierre put shots on net. However, junior goalie
Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) made both saves while MIT recorded its final goal of the day with 45 seconds remaining. On a penalty corner, Tomovski redirected a pass from junior
Anna Simmons (Wilmington, N.C.).
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Zimmer turned away one shot in 45 minutes of action while Duncan made two stops down the stretch. DeWeese-Moss tallied five saves for UNE.
Â
