THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 10 MIT 3, Vassar College 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-16)

- Records: No. 10 MIT (1-0), Vassar (0-1)

- The Lead: The nationally ranked No. 10 MIT women's volleyball team opened its season by sweeping Vassar College, 25-16, 25-15, 25-16, at the Gordon College Tournament on Friday night. Junior Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) collected 11 digs, becoming the 17th player in program history to reach the 1,000-dig mark. In addition, head coach Paul Dill recorded his 700th victory at the helm of MIT's women's volleyball program.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Set 1: Vassar claimed the first two points, but MIT put together a 7-1 run to secure the lead. The Engineers maintained a small cushion throughout the set as junior Lauren Keller's (Albuquerque, N.M.) kill captured the 25-16 win.

- Set 2: The Brewers quickly built a 4-1 lead, however, MIT replied with a 12-4 run as back-to-back aces by senior Ashley Margetts (Brownsburg, Ind.) put it ahead for good. Vassar narrowed the gap to 20-15, but the Engineers countered with two kills from junior Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.), two aces by sophomore Ali Gibbs (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), and a kill by senior Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) to thwart the late rally.

- Set 3: The first half of the set was closely played as there were six ties and four lead changes. Trailing 14-13, a kill by Margetts ignited a 12-2 match-ending run. During the rally, senior Emily Cheng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) recorded two aces while sophomore Paige Edwards (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) produced back-to-back aces which resulted in match point. A block kept the Brewers alive, however Rozario responded with a kill to clinch the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Gragg paced the Engineers' balanced attack with a match-high nine kills as Rozario, Keller, and Gibbs each notched seven kills. Cheng tallied 29 assists, 10 digs, two blocks, and two aces while Margetts added three aces.
