Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT opened the scoring with 2:36 left in the first quarter. During its fourth penalty corner of the frame, the ball emerged from a crowd in front of the cage and was collected by first year
Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands). With her back to the cage, she struck the ball and it sailed into the top left corner.
Â
- The Engineers controlled the action in the second quarter as they had advantages in shots (8-0), shots on goal (6-0), and penalty corners (3-0), however, the score remained unchanged.
Â
- MIT increased its lead to 2-0 after 3:45 elapsed in the third quarter when Tomovski corralled the rebound of graduate student
Liberty Ladd's (Cornelia, Ga.) saved shot and tapped it past Smith goalie
Rory Harper. The Engineers continued to attack, producing six shots and five penalty corners, but they could not add to their advantage.
Â
- MIT scored twice in the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach. During a penalty corner in the 48
th minute, sophomore
Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) sent a pass into traffic, but it made its way to first year
Janie Thomas (Houston, Texas) who tapped it in at the left post. After some back-and-forth action, the Engineers received back-to-back penalty corners. On the second attempt, McIntyre hit the ball to the middle of the arc where Forester collected it, spun around, and put it in the middle of the cage for the record-breaking goal.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- First year goalie
Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) finished with four saves while Harper collected 12 saves.
Â
- MIT ended the night with advantages in shots (27-6), shots on goal (16-4), and penalty corners (17-2).
Â

- Both teams return to non-conference action on Wednesday, Sept. 20. MIT will travel to No. 10 Amherst College for a 6:30 p.m. start while Smith will host Connecticut College at 7:00 p.m.
