The Lead: MIT graduate student
Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) hit a deflected ball while it was in midair and sent it over Amherst College goalie
Sara Nidus into the top left corner of the cage with 2.1 seconds left to play, lifting the No. 23 Engineers to a 2-1 victory over the No. 11 Mammoths in a non-conference field hockey game on Wednesday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT got on the scoreboard first with 3:28 left in the first quarter. On a penalty corner, first year
Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) sent a feed from junior
Alice Zehner (Gladwyne, Pa.) to the inside of the left post. Amherst replied with
Sam Maynard tallying the equalizer almost 90 seconds later.
Â
- The Mammoths had the upper hand in the second stanza as they generated eight shots, seven of which were stopped by first goalie
Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.), and two penalty corners.
Â
- Amherst was awarded a pair of penalty corners during the first 37 seconds of the third quarter but it could not produce a shot. The Engineers threatened to register the go-ahead goal in the 41
st minute when they received two penalty corners, however, shots by sophomore
Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) and junior
Ashley Lederman (Villanova, Pa.) were saved.
Â
- After holding the Mammoths without a shot for 20 minutes, Maynard sent a blast directly at Zimmer which she turned away. The hosts earned a penalty corner with just under nine minutes remaining, but MIT's defense did not surrender a shot. Junior
Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.) put a shot on goal in the 53
rd minute, however, it was blocked by a defender. The game became a back-and-forth affair until the final seconds when Tomovski sent a pass into the arc which deflected off an Amherst stick and was hit in by Forester.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Zimmer amassed 11 saves while Nidus made two stops.
Â
- Amherst led the way in shots (14-7), shots on goal (12-4), and penalty corners (7-4).
Â
- In a series that began in 1995, this was the first time in 15 meetings that the Engineers have defeated the Mammoths.
