The Lead: Just 1:12 into overtime, MIT graduate student
Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) found the back of the cage and propelled the No. 23 Engineers to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory at NEWMAC foe Springfield College on Saturday. Forester's game-winner completed the hat trick, and it also marked the second game in a row in which she scored the decisive goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Springfield opened the scoring at the 10:22 mark of the first quarter as
Kaitlin Bardellini took a feed from
Kaelin Cerasuolo and put a shot on cage from 10 yards out that managed to skip through a mass of defenders and across the end line.
- Both teams scored twice in the second stanza. Forester ended the shutout after 47 seconds elapsed as she blistered in a shot from the right alley. The Pride responded with a pair of goals from
Hailey Gaydos in a 1:27 span. The scoring burst started at the 26:44 mark as
Samara Skully took a penalty corner to the end line and delivered a centering pass to Gaydos who blasted in the strike. Gaydos followed this up in the 29
th minute as
Emma Robinson sent in a pass down the left sideline that Gaydos collected and flipped in from five yards out just inside the far post. First year
Janie Thomas (Houston, Texas) quickly followed with a solo effort as she narrowed the gap to 3-2 with 41 seconds remaining.
- MIT controlled the action in the third quarter as it had advantages in shots (9-0), shots on goal (5-0), and penalty corners (5-0) but it could not tally the equalizer.
- The Engineers continued to attack, tying the game in the 50
th minute. Following back-to-back penalty corners, Forester redirected a feed from junior
Ashley Lederman (Villanova, Pa.). Junior goalie
Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) turned away Springfield's only shot of the quarter which came with 2:31 remaining in regulation.
- MIT completed its comeback just over a minute into the extra session. Junior
Alice Zehner (Gladwyne, Pa.) deflected a clearing attempt by Springfield and then sophomore
Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) collected the bouncing ball and fed it to Forester, who faked the goalie to the right and flipped the ball into the top of the cage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- First year
Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) made one save in the first half while Duncan finished out the game and stopped the only shot she faced.
Neilee Hess collected 11 saves for the Pride.
- The Engineers led the way in shots (25-6), shots on goal (16-5), and penalty corners (12-2).
