- The Lead: In the NEWMAC opener for both teams, the MIT football team dropped a 34-7 home final to Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon in Cambridge. This marked the first NEWMAC contest for the Seahawks as they joined the conference this fall.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
The Seahawks got on the board just 3:50 into the first quarter when
Jake Stack connected with
Josh Letellier from 30 yards out on fourth down for the 7-0 advantage. Â
Â
- MIT answered with 9:15 remaining in the second quarter as sophomore quarterback
Chase Harmon (West Linn, Ore.) turned up the far sideline from 24 yards out to tie the game at 7-7. The Seahawks eventually took a 14-7 lead into the half as the visitors took advantage of an MIT fumble that gave Salve the ball at the 29-yard line. On the first play after the turnover, Stack found
John Hannon in the back left of the end zone for an acrobatic catch and his second passing TD of the contest.
Â
- Salve Regina stretched the lead to 20-7 on its second drive of the third period when Stack found Hannon behind the MIT defense at the 40-yard line and he outran everyone en route to the 68-yard TD score.
Justan Luzzi scored up the middle from five yards out on the first play of the fourth, followed by a four-yard rushing touchdown off the left side by
Kyle Crampton to cap a 13-play, 92-yard drive and account for the 34-7 final.
