Â
- The Lead: In a NEWMAC matchup on Saturday afternoon, the MIT football team came up short in a 36-14 road final at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Coast Guard opened the scoring with 10:55 left in the first when
Joey Armentrout found
Broock Desta over the top from 26 yards out for the 7-0 lead. The Bears added to the lead with a 27-yard field goal from
Brennan Holt that closed out the first-quarter scoring. That score was set up by a pass to Desta inside the five-yard line as he wrestled his way down to the three-yard line.
Â
- The Engineers answered with a scoring drive of their own, working their way down inside the five-yard line after two long passes and a Coast Guard penalty that put the ball at the four. Senior
Brady Klein (Washington, Ill.) ran off the right side and fought his way to the end zone, pulling MIT within 10-7 with 10:06 remaining in the half.
Â
- MIT moved back into Coast Guard territory with a 21-yard reception by first-year
Keegan Doody (Eastchester, N.Y.) that put the ball at the 42-yard line. After a penalty negated an MIT touchdown, Doody pulled down another pass at the 25 to keep the drive going. Graduate student
Brandon Eickert (St. Charles, Ill.) attempted a 36-yard field goal with 4:18 remaining that was blocked to keep the score at 10-7.
Â
- The Bears eventually turned the blocked kick into points as Desta's long reception gave Coast Guard the ball at the MIT 27-yard line.
Chase Denton then pulled down a screen pass on the near side at the 12 and he fought his way to the end zone for the 17-7 advantage with 1:48 left.
Â
- Coast Guard got the ball back once again late in the first half, but MIT sophomore
Griffin Fisk (Cypress, Texas) picked off Armentrout in the end zone to send the game into the break at 17-7 in favor of the Bears.
Â
- On the first drive of the third quarter, Coast Guard drove the ball down to the MIT one-yard line, but it was the Engineer defense and sophomore
Chase Williams (Missoula, Mont.) that stuffed Armentrout on the fourth-down quarterback keeper to give MIT the ball back.
Â
- The lone score of the third quarter came off the foot of Holt as he converted a 28-yard field goal for the 20-7 advantage with 33 seconds remaining in the period.
Â
- MIT opened the fourth-quarter scoring when Klein scored up the middle from one yard out that pulled the Engineers within 20-14. That score was set up by a 28-yard reception by junior
Collin DesRoberts (Temecula, Calif.) as a near interception was tipped into the hands of DesRoberts to keep the drive going into Coast Guard territory.
Â
- The Bears pushed the lead back to a two-score game as Coast Guard converted a fourth down to get inside the 10 and Armentrout scored from one yard out for the 27-14 margin with 7:37 on the clock. Coast Guard picked up a safety with 2:42 remaining, along with a touchdown with 44 seconds left for the 36-14 final.
