The Lead: A 13-4 run during the final 6:35 of the second quarter helped MIT pull away as it went on to defeat Wellesley College, 73-43, in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Wednesday night. Junior
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) led all players with 16 points and eight rebounds while also grabbing two steals for the Engineers.
Mirella Funari tallied 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals for the Blue.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Layups by Funari and
Arla Hofer gave Wellesley an 8-6 edge at the 4:44 mark of the opening frame. However, a three-pointer by graduate student
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) during MIT's next possession sparked a 17-6 run that resulted in a 23-14 lead at the end of the quarter.
- The Blue opened the second stanza with baskets by
Caitlin Windross and Funari, but a layup by sophomore
Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) kicked off a 13-4 run. Nwogu accounted for six points as the Engineers entered halftime with 36-22 advantage.
- MIT controlled the action in the third quarter as it outscored Wellesley, 23-6.
- In a balanced fourth quarter, the visitors had a 15-14 scoring edge. Windross powered the Blue with seven points and four rebounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) posted 12 points and three assists while senior
Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) notched seven rebounds and five assists. Hall and junior
Olivia Joseph (Newtown Square, Pa.) both collected seven rebounds as junior
Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) added nine points.

Jiyun Chae paced Wellesley with 12 points while Windross finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
Anna Bandini rounded out the Blue with six rebounds and a game-high three blocks.
- MIT led the way in rebounds (48-29), points off turnovers (15-11), points in the paint (34-18), second-chance points (20-8), and bench scoring (31-4).
UP NEXT:
- Both teams host NEWMAC opponents on Saturday, January 27. MIT will play Mount Holyoke College at 2:00 p.m. while Wellesley will take on the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at 1:00 p.m.
