Five Score in Double-Figures as Men's Basketball Defeats Salve Regina, 86-81

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT - 86, Salve Regina - 81

- Records: MIT (4-16, 3-8 NEWMAC), Salve Regina (10-10, 4-7 NEWMAC)

- Location: Newport, R.I. (Rodgers Recreation Center)

- The Lead: All five starters scored in double-figures as the MIT men's basketball team rallied for its second straight win as the Engineers hung on for the 86-81 road NEWMAC win over Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- First year Will Bland (Virginia Beach, Va.) put MIT up 7-2 with a jumper at 16:06. His dunk and a three from sophomore Tim Minicozzi (Belmont, Mass.) put the Engineers up nine at 14:31. MIT continued to build on its lead as a three from senior Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, Calif.) made it a 20-12 Engineer lead. Salve went on a 13-0 run to pull ahead 30-22, but five straight points from Bland got MIT to within three.

- First year Merlin Gogolin (New York, N.Y.) put MIT back in the lead with a layup with 2:14 remaining, but the Seahawks quickly went on a 10-0 run to go up 40-34 and the Seahawks took a 43-38 lead into the break.

- Bland tied the game at 45 with a three-point play, however, Salve quickly built a seven-point advantage. A layup from first year Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) tied the game at 54 with 13:28 remaining.

- Bland again gave the Engineers the lead with two free throws at 11:39, and a three-point play from Minicozzi gave MIT a 62-57 lead. Dobie hit a three to make it a seven-point MIT lead, but Salve quickly cut the lead to one on a layup from Declan Walmsley.

- A four-point play from Bland with 4:59 left sealed the win for the Engineers as a three from Dobie made it an 11-point lead, and the Engineers held on for the 86-81 win.
