The Lead: An 11-6 run during the final three minutes of the third quarter helped MIT create enough of a cushion as it went on to defeat Emerson College, 70-62, in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Wednesday night. Junior
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) led a balanced effort for the Engineers as she tallied 13 points, four assists, and three steals.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- During the final 1:31 of the opening quarter, a layup by junior
Olivia Joseph (Newtown Square, Pa.) coupled with two free throws and a jumper from sophomore
Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) gave MIT a 15-11 lead.
Â
- Graduate student
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) knocked down a jumper 12 seconds into the second stanza. However, Emerson put together an 10-2 run that resulted in a 21-19 edge at the 5:58 mark. Choi replied with a jumper and later buried a three-pointer to put the Engineers back in front with just over four minutes left. The Lions stayed close but a layup from Hall increased the visitors' lead to 35-29 heading into halftime.
Â
- Emerson remained within striking distance for most of the third quarter as a three-point play trimmed its deficit to 46-41 with 3:18 on the clock. MIT capitalized on a pair of free throws by Choi and first year
April Chan (Fremont, Calif.), helping start its pivotal 11-6 run.
Â
- The Engineers maintained a double-digit lead during the early stages of the fourth quarter, however, the Lions generated a 9-2 run that brought them within 63-58 at the 3:51 mark. MIT responded with two free throws from Hall and a jumper by junior
Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) to create some breathing room before going on to capture the 70-62 victory.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Hall and Antonakakis both finished with 12 points while Hall grabbed five rebounds. Junior
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) totaled nine points, six rebounds, and three steals as Harvey registered nine points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
Â
- The Engineers led the way in rebounds (33-32), points off turnovers (18-9), second-chance points (9-7), and bench scoring (32-4). The Lions had the upper hand in points in the paint (40-18).
