No. 5 Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Salve Regina, Improves to 15-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With a 25-10, 25-14, 25-10 victory over NEWMAC foe Salve Regina University on Tuesday night, the No. 5 MIT women's volleyball team improved to 15-0 on the year and 3-0 in conference play. The Engineers' 15-0 ledger equals the program's best start since the 2017 season.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 5 MIT 3, Salve Regina 0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-10)
  • Records: No. 5 MIT (15-0 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC), Salve Regina (5-8 Overall, 2-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Set 1: MIT recorded the first seven points before back-to-back kills by first-year Julia Tolstova (Redlands, Calif.) secured the 25-10 victory.
  • Set 2: Salve Regina jumped out to a 9-1 advantage following a block by juniors Avery Fitzgerald (Milford, Conn.) and Lauren Hoyle (Albany, N.Y.). The Engineers battled back and eventually won the set, 25-14, on a kill from first-year Jennifer Cen (Orlando, Fla.).
  • Set 3: MIT gradually built a 12-4 lead before going on to capture the frame at 25-10 courtesy of a kill by first-year Jessie Trapp (Elmhurst, Ill.).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) generated a match-high 12 kills to go along with a .455 hitting percentage, eight digs, and two aces for the Engineers. Tolstova finished with 10 kills on 15 errorless attempts as sophomore Eileen Sadati (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) posted six kills and two blocks.
  • MIT sophomore Kayleigh May (Camarillo, Calif.) totaled 24 assists and four digs in two sets while first-year Jillian Amaro (Woodside, Calif.) notched seven assists and two aces. Junior Claire Underwood (Yorba Linda, Calif.) earned three aces as senior Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) collected eight digs.
  • Hoyle paced the Seahawks with seven kills while senior Siena DeCicco (Severna Park, Md.) totaled 13 assists and eight digs. Sophomore Lily Dobbins (Richmond, N.Y.) chipped in six digs as Fitzgerald and junior Lucy Swanson (West Yarmouth, Mass.) both recorded two blocks.
UP NEXT:
  • Both teams return to action on Saturday, October 5. MIT will travel to NEWMAC rival Mount Holyoke College for a 12:00 PM match while Salve Regina will host a tri-match featuring NEWMAC foe Clark University at 11:00 AM and then non-conference opponent Endicott College at 3:00 PM.
