Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 16 Field Hockey Defeats WPI, 3-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two goals during the first 1:20 of the third quarter gave No. 16 MIT enough of a cushion as it went on to defeat WPI, 3-1, in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en duin, Netherlands) produced a goal and an assist for MIT while fifth-year Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, Mass.) scored the lone goal for WPI.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 16 MIT 3, WPI 1
  • Records: No. 16 MIT (9-3 Overall, 5-0 NEWMAC); WPI (6-6 Overall, 3-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a scoreless first half that saw MIT hold advantages in shots (18-3), shots on goal (9-2), and penalty corners (15-1), the hosts ended the stalemate 34 seconds into the third quarter. From the near side, Tomovski passed the ball to sophomore Janie Thomas (Houston, Texas) who one-timed it to the far post.
  • Less than a minute later, MIT created some breathing room when sophomore Audrey Oh (Longmeadow, Mass.) received a pass from junior Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) at the far side of the arc and redirected it to the near post.
  • MIT tacked on an insurance goal 2:03 into the fourth quarter as Tomovski scored during a penalty corner with seniors Ashley Lederman (Villanova, Pa.) and Faith Choe (San Diego, Calif.) earning the assists.
  • WPI ended the shutout with 5:57 remaining. During a penalty corner, junior Eve Martineau (Greene, Maine) set up Meinhold at the top of the arc who sent a blast through traffic to the back of the cage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore goalie Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) made seven saves for MIT.
  • Senior Ella Moreau (Huntington, Mass.) collected 11 saves for WPI in 52 minutes as first-year Myles Lakin (Reading, Mass.) closed out the game for the visitors.
  • MIT ended the day with advantages in shots (30-12), shots on goal (14-8), and penalty corners (25-6).
