No. 15 Field Hockey Overpowers Gordon, 10-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Seven players recorded at least one point in No. 15 MIT's 10-0 victory over Gordon College in a non-conference field hockey game on Wednesday night. Senior Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.) posted a hat trick for the second time in her career as she previously accomplished this feat against the Fighting Scots last season.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 15 MIT 10, Gordon 0
  • Records: No. 15 MIT (10-3 Overall); Gordon (0-14 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Audrey Oh (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored twice during the first 6:13 of action as both of her goals came during penalty corners. Oppenheim gave MIT a 3-0 lead when she knocked in the rebound of her saved shot with just over two minutes remaining in the opening frame.
  • Oppenheim carried the momentum into the second stanza as she completed the natural hat trick with goals in the 17th and 19th minutes. Sophomore Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) was a factor in the Engineers' next two goals which moved the score to 7-0. She found the back of the cage in the 21st minute and then set up junior Shealy Callahan (Oak Park, Ill.) for her first goal of the season just over two minutes later.
  • Sophomore Sammi Blocher (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) buried a penalty stroke after 1:51 elapsed in the third quarter. First-year Kayla Han (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) followed with the first points of her career. She produced a goal in the 39th minute and then set up junior Hannah Hicks (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) for what proved to be the final goal of the game in the 41st minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) and senior Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) split the game in cage for MIT and were not forced to make a save.
  • Junior Allyson Stauffer (Lancaster, Pa.) made eight saves in the first quarter while first-year Haylee Briggs (Plymouth, Mass.) turned away five shots during the rest of the game.
  • The Engineers led the way in shots (43-0), shots on goal (23-0), and penalty corners (16-0).
