Doss' Late Score Gives No. 5 Women's Soccer a 1-0 Win Over Coast Guard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With just over 11 minutes remaining in a scoreless match, sophomore Arianna Doss (Houston, Texas) took a long pass and got past her defender to score the game-winner for the No. 5 MIT women's soccer team as the Engineers earned the 1-0 NEWMAC win over Coast Guard on Wednesday afternoon on Roberts Field.

THE BASICS
  • Score: No. 5 MIT 1, Coast Guard 0
  • Records: MIT (12-1-1 Overall, 6-0 NEWMAC), Coast Guard (2-8-3 Overall, 2-3-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two teams played a scoreless first half with the Engineers holding a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal. Junior Sean Luk (Bel Air, Md.), senior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.), and Doss had the best scoring opportunities for MIT in the half, but their shots were saved by Emily Scharnitzky (Charleston, S.C.)
  • Senior Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) saw her shot 48:19 sail just high to keep the game scoreless.
  • The two teams remained tied until first year Sasha Ceol (Sherborn, Mass.) sent a long pass to Doss who raced past the Bears' defense and deposited a shot off the far post into the back of the net to give MIT the lead.
  • The Bears looked to tie the game late, but the Engineers' defense and keeper Maddy Noll (Northbrook, Ill.) kept them off the board.
