Football Drops NEWMAC Contest at No. 25 Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Graduate student Arsen Shtefan (West Hartford, Conn.) and senior Blane Hart (East Lyme, Conn.) each scored a pair of rushing touchdowns as No. 25 Springfield College defeated the MIT football team, 48-0, in NEWMAC play on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

The Pride finished the contest with 516 yards on the ground, with Shtefan totaling a team leading 86 yards on 15 carries and Hart adding 83 yards on six attempts. In all, Springfield had six players with 50 or more rushing yards in the contest.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: No. 25 Springfield 48, MIT 0
  • Records: Springfield (6-0 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC), MIT (2-4 Overall, 0-4 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MIT went three-and-out on its opening possession before the Pride scored on the team's third play from scrimmage when Hart found a gap and escaped for a 43-yard touchdown at 11:46 of the first quarter
  • With MIT unable to find a rhythm on its second drive, the ball went back to the Pride. However, the Engineers defense came up big on the fifth play of the drive, as junior Lucky Deignan (Indianapolis, Ind.) scooped up a fumble to give the ball back to MIT at 7:05.
  • Another three-and-out from the Engineers was followed by a missed field goal from the Pride as the game moved into the second quarter.
  • Sophomore Carson Phelps (Wichita, Kan.) picked up an MIT first down with a 13-yard reception on the next drive but a bad snap on the next set of downs would force the Engineers to punt from deep in their own territory, setting up Springfield near midfield on the next drive.
  • The Pride took advantage, going 53 yards on nine plays to take a 14-0 lead when Hart scored for the second time in the first half.
  • The Springfield lead would grow to 21-0 before halftime when graduate student Joseph Cannizzaro's (Lincoln Park, N.J.) scored on a 1-yard run on the next Springfield possession.
  • Leading by three scores at the break, the Pride lead jumped to 27-0 when Shtefan scored on the fourth play of Springfield's first drive of the third quarter. Shtefan would add a second score on the ground later in the quarter as the hosts moved the lead to 34-0 following a 10-play, 66-yard drive.
  • Fourth quarter scores from senior Thomas Tini (East Northport, N.Y), a three-yard rush and senior Johnnell Fillippini (Plymouth, Mass.), a 61-yard dash, pushed the final score to 48-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • MIT first year running back Brendan Spellman (Bay Village, Ohio) totaled 45 yards on 13 attempts to lead the MIT offense.
  • Senior Daniel Monaghan (Northfield, Minn.) punted eight times, including a long of 55-yards for MIT.
  • Springfield limited the Engineers to just five first downs on offense.
  • The shutout was Springfield's first since the 2021 season, when the Pride defeated Coast Guard 60-0.
  • Springfield, the Division III leader in rushing offense, has now topped 500 yards rushing in three consecutive games.

UP NEXT:

  • MIT will return home to host Maritime College on Senior Day at Steinbrenner Stadium on Saturday, October 26 at 12:00 PM. Springfield will travel to Salve Regina next Saturday.
