No. 15 Field Hockey Tops Mount Holyoke, 7-1

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – A balanced scoring performance helped No. 15 MIT defeat Mount Holyoke College, 7-1, in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Tuesday night. Senior Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.) scored twice while senior Ashley Lederman (Villanova, Pa.), senior Alice Zehner (Gladwyne, Pa.), and sophomore Janie Thomas (Houston, Texas) each produced one goal and one assist for the Engineers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 15 MIT 7, Mount Holyoke 1
  • Records: No. 15 MIT (12-3 Overall, 7-0 NEWMAC); Mount Holyoke (7-9 Overall, 0-7 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • During a penalty corner after 6:50 elapsed, Lederman scored on a feed from Zehner that deflected into the top of the cage. MIT increased its lead less than two minutes later when Oppenheim knocked in the rebound of Thomas's saved shot.
  • In the 19th minute, Oppenheim battled for a loose ball at the far post and quickly hit it to the near post, resulting in a 3-0 advantage.
  • The score remained unchanged until a solo effort by sophomore Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) in the 35th minute. Mount Holyoke ended the shutout a minute later, but the Engineers responded with two goals to build a 6-1 lead. Junior Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) sent a pass from the endline to Zehner who hit the ball from the top of the arc. Sophomore Jane Tortorella (Old Greenwich, Conn.) followed with a shot that went through traffic to the far post.
  • MIT's final goal came in the 50th minute. Lederman sent the ball in from just inside the 23-meter line and it made its way through the arc and deflected off Thomas's stick.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
