No. 15 Field Hockey Falls to Babson, 2-1, on Senior Day

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In a battle of nationally ranked and unbeaten NEWMAC field hockey teams, No. 7 Babson College held on for a 2-1 victory over No. 15 MIT on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) provided the lone goal for the Engineers while graduate student Katie Guden (Belmont, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal for the Beavers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 7 Babson 2, No. 15 MIT 1
  • Records: No. 15 MIT (12-4 Overall, 7-1 NEWMAC); No. 7 Babson (14-3 Overall, 8-0 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • With 2.2 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Babson first-year Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) corralled a ball that had been batted around in the arc and backhanded a shot to the near post.
  • MIT tied the game in the 23rd minute when Tomovski hit a feed from senior Faith Choe (San Diego, Calif.) from the top of the arc to the near post during a penalty corner.
  • Just over two minutes later, the Beavers took a 2-1 lead when Guden knocked in the rebound of a saved shot in a scrum in front of the cage.
  • Babson almost added an insurance goal five minutes into the fourth quarter. Graduate student Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) chased down a loose ball that went to the goal, but it was kicked away by sophomore goalie Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) right before Marguerite had a chance to hit it.
  • With 1:32 left to play, the Engineers received the first of three penalty corners but could not find the back of the cage.
  • MIT's final scoring attempt came with 38 seconds on the clock, however, the penalty stroke by Tomovski was wide.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Zimmer finished with four saves as senior Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) turned away three shots for Babson.
  • The Beavers led the way in shots (14-7) and shots in goal (6-4), but the Engineers had an 11-10 edge in penalty corners.
UP NEXT:
  • MIT wraps up the regular season on Saturday, November 2 when it travels to NEWMAC foe Salve Regina University for a 12:00 PM game. Babson, meanwhile, returns to action on Tuesday, October 29 when it hosts the University of New England at 6:00 PM.
