No. 4 Women's Soccer Stays Perfect in NEWMAC Play With 2-0 Win over WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 4 MIT women's soccer team remained perfect in NEWMAC play as MIT defeated WPI 2-0 on Saturday night on H. Carr Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • MIT got on the board in the 28th minute when sophomore Madelyn Popilek (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) headed in the corner kick from junior Leena Mehendale (Dallas, Texas) for the goal.
  • The Engineers continued to pepper WPI goalkeeper Lili Hellerman (Ashland, Mass.) who made five saves in the first half to keep it a one goal game.
  • Senior Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif) got the rebound off her first shot attempt with 3:18 remaining and got the ball past a diving Hellerman to make it 2-0 MIT.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Barnouw collected her NEWMAC-leading ninth goal of the season and the 28th of her career.
  • Popilek notched her second goal of the year while the assist was the second of the season for Mehendale.
  • In net, first year Maddy Noll (Northbrook, Ill.) made two saves for her fourth shutout of the season. She improved to 7-0-0 on the year.
  • Hellerman made 16 stops in net and fell to 6-5-3.
  • MIT has not allowed a WPI goal in the last three meetings.
  • This is the 11th shutout of the year for MIT.
UP NEXT: 
  • MIT returns home to host Wellesley on Wednesday, October 30 at 4:00 PM. WPI heads to Emerson for a 6:00 PM contest on Wednesday.
