Big Second Quarter Propels No. 16 Field Hockey to 6-0 Win Over Wheaton

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three goals in a span of 1:15 in the second quarter powered the No. 16 MIT field hockey team to a 6-0 victory over Wheaton College in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. Sophomore Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) generated the final four goals for the Engineers.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 16 MIT 6, Wheaton 0
  • Records: No. 16 MIT (7-3 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC); Wheaton (6-4 Overall, 0-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT's pivotal three-goal burst began 3:42 into the second quarter when senior Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.) collected a loose ball in the arc and sent it to sophomore Jane Tortorella (Old Greenwich, Conn.) who tapped it in at the far post.
  • Exactly 28 seconds later, Oppenheim connected on a feed from senior Alice Zehner (Gladwyne, Pa.) at the near post.
  • Tomovski produced the final goal of the run just 47 seconds later when she dribbled along the endline into the middle of the arc and placed a shot to the near post.
  • The Engineers continued to pull away as Tomovski found the back of the cage twice with within the first 2:16 of the third quarter.
  • After having her penalty stroke saved in the 50th minute, Tomovski capped the scoring courtesy of another solo effort with 3:18 left to play.
  • Wheaton's best chances to end the shutout occurred in during the 55th minute when it produced three shots on goal and a penalty corner.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • In net, sophomore Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) was not forced to make a save in the first half while senior Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) closed out the game for MIT and notched three saves.
  • Sophomore Grace Ferguson (Williston, Vt.) racked up 16 saves for the Lyons.
  • The Engineers ended the day with advantages in shots (36-4), shots on goal (22-3), and penalty corners (12-2).
UP NEXT:
  • Both teams continue NEWMAC play on Tuesday, October 8. MIT will travel to Wellesley College for a 6:00 PM start while Wheaton will host Salve Regina University at 7:00 PM.
