No. 3 Women's Soccer Completes Perfect NEWMAC Regular Season with 3-0 Win Over Emerson on Senior Day

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The third-ranked MIT women's soccer team completed a perfect NEWMAC season as the Engineers defeated Emerson 3-0 on Roberts Field to conclude the regular season with an 11-0 mark in conference play. The win secured the top seed for the Engineers in the NEWMAC Championship.
 
This marked the 12th NEWMAC regular season title for MIT which has now made 25 NEWMAC Championship appearances.
 
Before the match, the Engineers recognized their senior class for their dedication and commitment to the program. The Engineers recognized were: Remington Sandell (South Salem, N.Y.), Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.), Emiko Pope (St. Louis, Mo.), Lauren Davis (Whitefish Bay, Wis.), and Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.)
 
THE BASICS
  • Score: No. 3 MIT 3, Emerson 0
  • Records: MIT (17-1-1 Overall, 11-0 NEWMAC), Emerson (6-7-5 Overall, 5-4-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • The Engineers wasted no time getting on the board, scoring twice in the first ten minutes of play. The first goal of the day came off a cross from sophomore Madeline Seebeck (San Antonio, Texas) to Pope, who tipped the ball into the goal at 4:05.
  • A shot by junior Sean Luk (Bel Air, Md.) rang off the post and went right to senior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) who knocked the ball past the keeper at 6:01 to make it a 2-0 Engineer lead.
  • First year Tatum Cohen (Long Beach, Calif.) had the best chance for Emerson in the half, but her shot attempt was blocked.
  • Luk eventually found the back of the net when her strike off a free kick by Davis rang off the inside of the crossbar and bounced over the goal line in the 23rd minute.
  • The MIT offense continued to pressure the Emerson defense, as they took six shots in the early portions of the second half, but the Lions held the Engineers to just three goals.
  • Senior Lauren Carlson (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) got a shot on net for the visitors at 72:31 but sophomore Cassidy Jennings (Sioux Falls, S.D.) made the save.
 INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • MIT has had five unbeaten conference records since 2014. The Engineers went 10-0 in 2019.
  • The Engineers have won six of 11 NEWMAC games via the shutout.
  • Rowlett tallied her second goal and is now in sole possession of second all-time in career points.
  • Luk recorded her sixth goal of the year while Pope got her fifth.
  • The Engineer defense allowed just four shots as they posted their 12th shutout of the season.
  • First year Maddy Noll (Northbrook, Ill.) and Jennings combined for the shutout win.
  • Senior Amara Schaub (Torrance, Calif.) made 10 saves for Emerson.
UP NEXT: 
  • As the No. 1 seed in the NEWMAC, the Engineers will host eight-seed Coast Guard in quarterfinal action on Tuesday, November 5 at 4:00 PM on Roberts Field.
