Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls to Rhode Island College, 69-62

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – MIT came within two points with 2:55 remaining in regulation, but a six-point burst created enough of a cushion as host Rhode Island College held on for a 69-62 win in the opening game of the Anchorwomen Tip Off Tournament on Friday night. Senior Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) generated 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists for the Engineers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Rhode Island College 69, MIT 62
  • Records: MIT (2-2 Overall); Rhode Island College (2-1 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A layup by first-year Libi Matityahoo (Yehud Monosson, Israel) gave MIT a 21-13 lead with 2:08 on the clock, however, RIC rattled off five straight points to close out the quarter.
  • The second stanza was a back-and-forth affair until the Anchorwomen generated a 7-0 run late in the quarter to take a 34-29 lead at halftime.
  • The Engineers opened the third quarter with a 15-4 run as a three pointer by sophomore Kaitlin Tam (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) resulted in a 44-38 advantage at the 3:24 mark. An exchange of baskets followed as a layup by RIC narrowed the gap to 48-45 late in the frame.
  • The Anchorwomen carried the momentum into the fourth quarter as they outscored MIT, 11-3, during the first five minutes. The Engineers battled back as they trimmed the deficit to two points on two occasions, the last at 58-56 courtesy of senior Elise Harvey's (Wayland, Mass.) layup with 2:55 left to play. RIC created some breathing room with a layup with 1:27 to go and then increased its advantage following a 4-of-4 performance at the charity stripe during the next 39 seconds.
  • Harvey drained two free throws with 36 seconds remaining and after a free throw by the hosts, Nwogu buried a trey to bring MIT within four (65-61) 11 seconds later. The Anchorwomen thwarted the comeback attempt by draining their next four free-throw attempts.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Junior Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) contributed five rebounds and two steals as senior Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) notched three assists and two blocks.
