No. 7 Keene State Tops Men’s Basketball, 89-60

KEENE, N.H. – No. 7 Keene State University cruised to an 89-60 non-conference victory over the MIT men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Spaulding Gym.  

THE BASICS:   

  • Score: Keene State 89, MIT 60 
  • Records: Keene State (4-0 Overall), MIT (4-3 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:   

  • Senior Octavio Brito (Lincoln, R.I.) scored 20 points to lead the Owls, finishing 8-of-17 from the floor while also recording five rebounds, four steals, three assists, and a block.  
  • Sophomore Issac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) was the high scorer for the Engineers, finishing with 11 points and five rebounds.  
  • Keene State built an early first half lead and never trailed through the remainder of regulation. A 19-2 run through the opening 5:30 of the first half saw the Owls take a 19-4 lead at the 14:35 mark.  
  • MIT trimmed the early deficit back to seven points when a layup from Dobie made the score 19-12 to end an 8-0 MIT run at 12:52. 
  • The Owls responded with a 15-0 run that opened the lead to 22 points. A dunk from Sophomore Wesley Odiase (Dorchester, Mass.) closed out the run at 8:19. 
  • Keene State would lead by as many as 24 points before taking a 17-point lead into the half.  
  • The Owls would lead by as many as 20 points for most of the second half, stretching the MIT deficit to 29 points by the end of regulation.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Keene State pressured the Engineers throughout the contest, forcing 27 turnovers while scoring 38 points off turnovers and outscoring MIT in fast break points, 27-6.  
  • First year Jackson Weiland (Medford, Ore.) turned in a strong performance for MIT, scoring 10 points and adding four assists in 23 minutes off the bench.
  • Brito was one of four Keene State players in double figures along with Odiase, Nate Siow (Lowell, Mass.), who each scored 13, and Mason Jean Baptiste (Lynn, Mass.), who added 12 points. 
  • MIT junior Rome Delgado-Gonzalez (Miami, Fla.) had a game high six rebounds.  

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT opens NEWMAC play on Wednesday evening, December 4, with a 7:00 PM contest at Springfield College. Keene State will play at Tufts in non-conference play on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
