No. 11/14 Smith Defeats Women’s Basketball, 71-47

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A 13-4 run during the last four minutes of the second quarter created enough of a cushion before No. 11/14 Smith College pulled away for a 71-47 victory over MIT in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday night in Rockwell Cage. Senior Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) paced the Engineers with 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists while graduate student Ally Landau (Livingston, N.J.) amassed 20 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists for the Pioneers.

THE BASICS:

  • Records: MIT (2-7 Overall); Smith (7-1 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Senior Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) increased the Engineers' lead with a basket just over 90 seconds into the second stanza. Smith went back in front after a layup by sophomore Maggie Fleming (Downers Grove, Ill.) and a three pointer by sophomore Virginia Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn.). First-year Libi Matityahoo's  (Yehud Monosson, Israel) jumper tied the game at 21 with 4:43 on the clock. However, a trey by Landau sparked the Pioneers' pivotal run which resulted in a 34-25 halftime lead.
  • Sophomore Hannah Martin (North Andover, Mass.) opened the third quarter with a three pointer for the visitors, but a jumper by Harvey and a three-point play from senior Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) narrowed the gap to 37-30 at the 6:52 mark. Landau replied with another three pointer as Smith went on to outscore MIT, 18-4, down the stretch.
  • The Pioneers continued to control the action in the fourth quarter as they had a 16-13 scoring edge, resulting in the 71-47 final score.
