No. 10 Men’s Swim & Dive Wraps Up Competition at MIT Winter Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –  The No. 10 MIT men's swimming and diving team won four events on the final night of the MIT Invitational on Sunday at the Zesiger Center Pool. Tufts University claimed the team title after three days of competition.  

THE BASICS:   

  • Final Team Standings: 1. Tufts (1,769); 2. MIT (1,538); 3. RPI (880); 4. Emory (48)  

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

3-Meter Diving 

  • First year Truman Remenicky (Brewerton, N.Y.) took third with a score of 488.20. Sophomore Jack Tucker (Naples, Fla.) was one spot back, earning fourth with a mark of 419.10.  

200 Medley Relay 

  • An electric 'A' final came down to tenths of a second, as Tufts 'A' relay out touched MIT's 'A' Relay of first year Nathan Kim (La Crescenta, Calif.), graduate student Tobe Obochi (Highland Park, Ill.), first year Aaron Martin (Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore Bryce Roberts (Mill Valley, Calif.). The Engineers finished with a time of 1:27.61, just off the time of 1:27.37 posted by the Jumbos. 

500 Free

  • First year Grant Hu (Allen, Texas) captured the event for the Engineers, clocking in at 4:26.74.  

200 Back 

  • Junior Zach West (Kailua, Hawaii) had the top MIT time with a runner-up performance in 1:47.78. 

100 Fly

  • Rookie Ben Wu (New Canaan, Conn.) tallied an NCAA B-Cut finishing as the runner-up in 48.48. 

200 Breast 

  • Senior Roderick Huang (Cupertino, Calif.) took second place in the 200 Breast by a narrow margin, finishing in 2:02.21. 

100 Free 

  • Obochi was the top swimmer in the 100 Free, taking first in 43.86 seconds.

200 IM 

  • Jason Wang (Brentwood, Tenn.) led the way for MIT, as the Engineers swept the top four spots in the event. Wang finished with an NCAA B-Cut time of 1:49.50.  
  • First year Kelson Cantrell (Walnut Creek, Calif.) was second in 1:51.75 while Huang added a third-place time in 1:52.04. Sophomore Aitor Arrese-Igor (Delray Beach, Fla.) finished fourth in 1:53.08. 

400 Free Relay 

  • A dominant opening 100 yards from Obochi set up the Engineers for victory in the 400 Free Relay. Roberts, Martin, and Kim kept up the pace to win the event in 2:57.10. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Remenicky's score the 3-Meter Board was an NCAA Regional qualifying mark (440.0) 
  • The 200 Medley Relay time is second on MIT's all-time records.
  • Hu's time in the 500 Freestyle was below the 2024 NCAA invited time and was the second fastest in MIT program history. The time currently ranks in the top five in the NCAA.
  • Eric Lundgren of Tufts set a new pool record to win the 200 Back in 1:44.65.

UP NEXT:  

  • The Engineers head into the winter break and will return to action on Friday, January 10 for a 6:00 PM meet against Boston University at the Zesiger Center Pool.
